It looks like coliforms are measured in mg/L. Is this true, or are they measured in colony forming units (CFUs) per mL?
Coliforms are regulated in drinking water based on the presence or absence of coliforms in drinking water, so in many cases the measure is not numeric, but simply "present" or "absent." When the test result is quantified, coliforms are measured in CFUs per 100 mL. For this purpose, "absent" is equivalent to < 1 CFU/100 mL.
