Frequent Questions

Can Chlorine Dioxide be used to meet requirements for a detectable secondary disinfectant residual?

Chlorine Dioxide may be used to meet the requirement to maintain a detectable secondary disinfectant residual in the distribution system for subpart H systems. Systems must use an approved analytical method to determine the residual level. However, few systems use chlorine dioxide as a disinfectant residual because of the extensive compliance monitoring requirements and stringent MRDL (MAXIMUM residual disinfectant level, not minimum; 0.8 mg/L), as well as the monitoring and compliance requirements for its associated byproduct chlorite.
