What is the difference between aquifer recharge wells and aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) wells?
Aquifer recharge wells are used only to replenish water in aquifers, while ASR wells are used to store water and then recover that water for a beneficial use (e.g., drinking water). Both types of wells, however, may have secondary objectives, such as subsidence control and prevention of salt-water intrusion into fresh water aquifers (The Class V Underground Injection Control Study, Volume 21: Aquifer Recharge and Aquifer Storage and Recovery Wells, EPA816-R-99-014u, September 1999).
