Frequent Questions

What is the definition of potable/safe water? Where can I find it in the Safe Drinking Water Act?

The Safe Drinking Water Act does not define ?safe? or ?potable? water. It establishes federal standards for drinking water. We can only say that tap water either does or does not meet federal standards. Even if it meets federal standards, however, tap water might not be safe if it is contaminated with an unregulated contaminant or contamination through some other scenario (for example, contamination resulting from residential piping).
