Promoting Sustainable Rural Water and Wastewater Systems
EPA signed a memorandum of agreement (5 pp, 374K, About PDF) with USDA to work together to increase the sustainability of rural drinking water and wastewater systems. The two agencies will assist rural systems in implementing strategies and tools to allow them to achieve short- and long-term sustainability to ensure the protection of public health, water quality, and sustainable communities.
- EPA Technical Assistance Centers
EPA funds eight Technical Assistance Centers (TACs) through earmark grants to provide on-site technical assistance, training, financial planning support and other services for small water systems. The TACs offer specialized technical assistance based on the needs of small systems in your area and provide management training that can improve system performance and efficiency.
- State Capacity Development Programs
Provides state-specific compliance assistance and training opportunities for small systems.
- The National Rural Water Association (NRWA)
Supports state RWAs in providing training programs and on-site assistance in areas such as water system operation and maintenance.
- The Rural Community Assistance Partnership (RCAP)
Offers training and technical assistance for facilities development, management and finance, planning and development, and more. RCAP is made up of six regional organizations.
- The American Water Works Association (AWWA)
Offers resources, workshops, and other assistance to public water systems.
- The National Environmental Services Center (NESC)
Composed of five organizations that provide assistance and training materials to support small system management and infrastructure security.
- Environmental Finance Centers (EFCs)
Provides state and local officials and small businesses with advisory services; education, publications, and training.
