Frequent Questions

What distance does EPA recommend between a household drinking water well and a septic system?

Due to the presence of nitrates and bacteria in septic tanks, EPA recommends a distance of at least 50 feet between a newly constructed well and a septic system.

In addition, household owners should contact local and state health departments for regulations and guidance on placement and construction of private wells (Drinking Water from Household Wells (PDF), EPA816-K-02-003, January 2002).
