Frequent Questions

During a boil water advisory or other disaster that may cause tap water to be unsafe to drink, can water from a swimming pool or water bed be used for drinking?

Water from swimming pools and water beds should not be for drinking because it may contain harmful contaminants. Sources of water than can be used in emergencies include bottled water, ice cubes, rainwater collected in food grade containers and then boiled, and water collected from hot water heaters or toilet tanks (not the bowl) and then boiled (Disaster Readiness Fact Kit; Emergency Drinking Water Treatment, NSF International).
