Frequent Questions

Is the H1N1 virus (i.e., swine flu virus) destroyed during standard drinking water treatment processes?

Yes.  H1N1 and other influenza viruses are easily disrupted by standard water treatment processes.  The USDA and EPA have concluded that free chlorine levels typically used in drinking water treatment are effective at deactivating the virus at temperatures as low as 5° Centigrade.
